What Does It Mean to Be a Femboy: Exploring the Essence
If you’ve been using the internet for the past five years, chances are you’ve heard of femboys.
The term is being used frequently in many online communities, and sometimes the LGBTQ community gets a bit confused about it.
That’s because some people don’t know how to differentiate between femboys, trans women, and cross-dressers.
Some even mistake them for Drag Queens. But after all, What does it mean to be a femboy?
It’s sometimes a style and sometimes an identity. It’s a different aspect of gender expression.
But it still challenges stereotypes and fits into the LGBTQ spectrum.
This article shall explain the basics of what makes femboys so unique.
So if you’re curious, make sure you keep reading it! It might clear your doubts.
It’s both a style and an identity
The term “femboy” is not limited to a particular style, although it was made popular as such.
When we hear “femboy,” we may also think of men with certain feminine traits.
Here, I’ll try to explain both concepts in a manner that’s easy to understand.
So let’s start with the style.
Femboys have a particular dress code, in a certain way.
It’s often a mix of masculine and feminine garments worn in a way that feminizes the wearer.
Although, the goal here is not to pass as the opposite gender.
Instead, femboys focus on incorporating femininity into masculine outfits.
Common garments include Skirts, Knee-high socks, and sometimes wigs.
Underwear is also an option, as femboys often wear panties, but bras are less common.
Now when it comes to the identity part, things are less predictable.
Femboys may act in several ways, sharing different feminine traits.
Most of them will often have effeminate body language, and some act submissively.
Others tend to be playful, innocent, and so on. But what they have in common is their less masculine nature.
Femboys aren’t just like other boys and may not feel comfortable performing “overmasculine” gender roles.
And in most cases, guys who show traces of a femboy identity may also like to dress up in a femboy style.
Being a femboy is not the same as being trans
It’s worth noting that femboys are not transgender women.
They do not identify as girls; they only have an effeminate gender expression.
They still identify as men but don’t conform to society’s standards of masculinity.
Trans women, on the other hand, identify as women and want to “pass” as such.
They will often use makeup to feminize their facial features; some will undergo gender reassignment surgery.
Femboys don’t do this, although some use light makeup sometimes.
They want to present as cute and effeminate boys instead of women.
And to do so, they incorporate feminine outfits and mannerisms without giving up on their masculine identities.
Femboys do share, however, a few similarities with cross-dressers.
Both are, essentially, men who wear feminine clothes.
But most cross-dressers like to use feminine names and pronouns while en-femme or roleplay as girls.
This is not the case for femboys, who keep their masculine personality.
Another difference is that cross-dressers are not always en femme.
At the same time, femboys wear their feminine garments most of the time.
It challenges the masculine stereotypes
We know that society likes to establish gender stereotypes.
Men are often treaty as overly masculine, strong, tough, and sometimes rude.
They are discouraged from expressing emotion or being sensitive.
Being fragile or soft is also deemed inadequate for men compared to being weak.
Besides that, self-care and beauty products are considered feminine concepts.
That’s why you don’t see a lot of men taking care of their appearance.
However, femboys embrace these behaviors.
They do things that would have been considered outrageous a few decades ago.
But challenging these stereotypes is a good thing.
It shows men that they can embrace their feminine side without being less masculine.
Femboys do that in a more exaggerated and feminine way.
But they may serve as an inspiration for other men to open up.
Everyone should be allowed to express their feelings and be soft and even sensitive.
It’s okay to be yourself despite gender stereotypes and made-up rules!
Anyone can be a femboy
There are no rules that prevent anyone from being a femboy.
The idealized image of a femboy is a boy who would be passable as a girl.
But this represents only a portion of this community.
You don’t have to fit into a specific body type category or pass as a woman.
All you have to do is be yourself, as long as you identify as a femboy!
There are even transgender femboys out there. Those are trans men who still embrace a certain femininity.
As such, anyone is qualified to be a femboy, yet it’s not easy.
Challenging gender stereotypes may be difficult or even frustrating.
But you may find strength within the community and gather the courage to express yourself as such!
They are getting popular nowadays
The femboy lifestyle is getting quite a lot of attention on the internet.
What happens is that we are breaking gender stereotypes for good.
As such, younger generations feel safe experimenting and expressing themselves in new ways.
This is a good thing since they discover new ways of being themselves.
That newfound courage inspires more young men daily to embrace their feminine side and find new possibilities.
As a result, the community grows, and more femboys show up.
The internet made it possible for them to find each other and for other people to find them.
There, they found acceptance and even fame. And because of that, many people are talking about femboys nowadays.
Summary
Femboys are unique in the LGBTQ community.
They are different than trans people and cross-dressers.
But are equally important in helping society overcome gender stereotypes.
They embrace a feminine side but have no fragile masculinity.
In other words, femboys know how to enjoy the best of both worlds!
And all it takes for you to become one is courage. What do you think about it?
Would you like to try a femboy lifestyle? Can you see how important they are to the community?
