What Is the International Day of Visibility

In light of the upcoming Transgender Day of Visibility TDOV, I thought it would be great to write an article about it and raise some awareness.

Because it’s a relatively new celebration, likely, you haven’t heard about it. That’s why here’s what you need to know, all summed up.

On March 31, the international trans and non-binary population around the world, celebrate this day and invite everyone to share and commemorate our history and visibility as a community.

It started merely eighteen years ago in the United States and has been growing ever since.

A special day destined to express and show support and love for the people who have been fighting for visibility all these years.

A joyful celebration day to visualize and expose our happy lifestyles to the world!

1. The Meaning and Purpose of This Day

On this day, we are meant to celebrate the contribution of the trans and gender-diverse community in society.

Also, to acknowledge, remember, and raise awareness of our history and remind us how far from ideal the actual situation for many still is.

TDOV invites us all to rally in our neighborhoods and cities and join the celebration of human diversity.

Many organize film views, marches, and educational events for everyone to participate in and learn how to make society a more inclusive environment for all of us.

It’s also a day to fight against transphobia and keep claiming our rights as human beings across the world.

2. How it Was Born?

Transgender Day of Visibility begins with the realization that this beautiful community hadn’t a day in which to show this beautiful side of life and celebrate it.

Before 2009, there wasn’t a day to honor this lifestyle and visualize our importance in society with a bright and joyful tone.

It was a psychotherapist trans woman named Rachel Crandall-Crocker who thought of this after years of attending marches for Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Then, she thought of how the only day in which trans people’s rights and the situation were visualized was because of a murder.

Tired of waiting for someone else to create it, she created this festivity.

She thought that individuals could gather and express themselves and be a visible part of society.

A day to organize within our local communities and fight for a more inclusive world.

By 2015, it was all over social media in many parts of the globe.

3. How Can You Take Part in It?

Depending on where you live, the Transgender Day of Visibility may be popular or not.

If it is, you probably know by now of any event you can take part in.

If this is the first time that you hear of this day, I suggest you look it up on the internet.

Check nearby LGBT centers to see if there is an event nearby to attend or info.

Choose the activity you think you will enjoy the most.

Join forces with the rest of the community for a good cause.

It can happen that there isn’t a relevant and visible trans community in your hometown.

I’ll give you some ideas below as to what you can do to celebrate this day in this case.

● Educating Yourself

If you live somewhere that’s impossible to find someone to celebrate this day with, you can use this occasion to learn more about the culture that brought us here.

Because the original idea for this celebration is to spend it happily, you can seize the opportunity to watch a movie with someone in your social circle.

Of course, you should pick something that relates to the festivity at hand.

You can also read stories and testimonies from trans people from around the world. Learn how close and similar we are, no matter how far!

● Teach and Raise awareness

If by any chance you happen to be fulfilling any educational role, it can be a good idea to prepare something in preparation for this celebration.

To offer people to discuss trans rights and visibility in a safe, guided environment is of great use to society.

With the proper and organized debate structure, we can bring schools, communities, or even families to have the opportunity to speak their minds and hear counterpoints to their thoughts.

It is a heavy task that includes preparing to clear misunderstandings that will surely arise when these topics are discussed.

I believe that this is especially true and helpful for kids and teens.

They can learn a lot from this experience and may discover that they are not as alone in the world as they think.

● Contributing Your Grain of Sand

If you can’t either organize or join any event, every little grain of sand counts, and yours is as important as any other.

Discuss the topic with any member of the family, reach out to acquaintances to hear their stories, or look for some online.

Learning the terminology to avoid mistreating fellow human beings.

There are millions of ways in which we can modify society simply by getting to know the person beneath the cover.

Reach out to a national LGBT center to learn how hard the situation is for many.

It is very easy to connect and find empathy when finding out a little about the history and the difficulties this community faces.

A day that was born with the spirit of celebrating and honoring our past and present and fighting for the future of this community.

Each year we gain more relevance and representation in the media, but hardly enough.

On March 31, I invite you all to share your thoughts and contribute to this day.

So that not only the next generation, but ourselves take our deserved place in society.

Coming out to the world is something we must do as a community and this is exactly what this day is for.
