Securing Wigs Properly for The Best Crossdressing Look

To my fellow crossdressers, I know how important wearing the perfect wig is to complete our crossdressing look, making us look as feminine as we desire.

With my crossdressing experience, I have learned various ways to secure the wigs on my head properly, so I got you!

Such ways include using wig caps, wearing bobby pins, applying adhesives, and more!

1. Why You Need to Secure Your Wigs

One of the main reasons why we, as crossdressers, have to secure our wigs is because they help unite our crossdressing look together, complementing our outfits and ensuring that we look best with the hairstyle we desire.

Another reason why it’s best to add adjuncts to keep our wigs in place is to allow them to adjust to the size of our heads.

There are several wigs available today that are easily adjustable and are designed mainly for crossdressers like us.

2. Putting on Wig Tape

One of the easiest ways to secure your wigs is using wig tape.

If you don’t know what a wig tape is, it’s a double-sided tape that adheres to your wig and head.

I know this product is quite simple, but it does wonders!

Using wig tapes guarantees that your wigs won’t fall off, and this method is approved by most stylists, crossdressers, and even Hollywood performers!

The Step-By-Step Method

Follow the easy step-by-step procedure below to secure your wig on your head using a wig tape successfully:

1. Prior to placing the wig tape, ensure that your hairline is clean and oil-free. You can use a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol to wipe your hairline. Remember that any oil or dirt can prevent the tape from sticking.

2. If your head has sensitive skin, applying a liquid band-aid using another cotton ball will help prevent the wig tape from causing skin irritation and damage.

3. Get your wig tape and start cutting it into several strips. Place each strip of tape along your hairline – from your head down to your nape.

4. Remove the paper from the strips of wig tape and position your wig. Adhere the wig on the strips of wig tape along your hairline and press it firmly to secure it until you reach the nape of your neck.

5. After the process, check how the wig looks on you and adjust accordingly.

• There are various wig tapes, such as rolls, spot tabs, and pre-cut strips.

• Wig tapes guarantee a strong grip, especially when they are made with polyurethane tabs.

• You can guarantee that wig tapes are effective even when you’re sweating after a day of cross-dressing.

• One roll of wig tape can last long, making it very price-worthy and budget-friendly.

Note the following cons as well:

• I don’t recommend this when you’re growing your natural hair because it can rip off your hair strands, and it can be painful.

• You cannot remove your wigs in the middle of the day when you want to cool your head.

3. Using Wig Glue

Another budget-friendly option to secure your wigs firmly is using wig glue or a roll-on adhesive.

Like wig tapes, I can only suggest using this method when you’re bald.

Once your hair starts to grow, it’s best to shift to another safe method on your natural hair without pulling it out.

The Step-By-Step Method

Follow the easy step-by-step procedure below to secure your wig on your head using a wig glue successfully:

1. Clean your hairline using cotton soaked in rubbing alcohol to ensure the glue fully adheres to your head.

2. Get your wig glue and apply a thin layer along your hairline. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your chosen wig glue for better effectiveness by checking its packaging.

3. Position your wig on top of your head and adhere it slowly to the wig glue applied to your hairline. Press your wig down gently to stick to the glue. Wait for at least ten minutes to let it dry before you style your wig to match your crossdressing outfit.

• I don’t recommend removing your wig in the middle of the day to cool your head because it’s time-consuming to reapply using wig glue.

• Using wig glue can cause skin irritation if you have sensitive skin, especially when oil and dirt build up beneath your wig.

• You have to remove wig glue with water, or your skin can be ripped off.

4. Choosing Wig Caps

Personally, using wig caps is my chosen method to secure my wigs firmly on my head.

Several wigs are already equipped with caps, saving you the hassle of buying them separately.

● Mesh Wig Caps

Crossdressers seldom use mesh wig caps because they fit better when you have long hair, like in women’s.

This material flattens your long natural hair to allow the wig to sit firmly on your head.

If you prefer wig caps but have sensitive skin, I suggest wig grip caps.

They provide an additional layer between the wig and your skin to prevent discomfort or skin irritation.

1. Clean your hairline using a clean cotton ball dabbed in rubbing alcohol.

2. Get your wig cap and stretch it using both hands to fit it on your head. My stylist suggests starting from the top of your head all the way back.

3. Ensure no air pockets by smoothing out your cap.

4. Once you have secured your wig cap, place your wig on top of it the same way you placed your wig cap on your head.

• The constant using of wig caps can allow sweat and oil to accumulate, making your caps smell bad.

5. Wearing Bobby Pins

You might be confused as to why bobby pins can help secure wigs, especially because we never use them, and they’re commonly made to be used by purely women.

However, my stylist shared that using these products is one of the most traditional ways to secure your wigs, especially when your natural hair grows.

Bobby pins are also easy to buy; they’re a quick fix to attaching your wigs when you feel them popping out while cross-dressing.

The Step-By-Step Method

Follow the easy step-by-step procedure below to secure your wig on your head by wearing bobby pins successfully:

1. Buy bobby pins that will match your wig color so that they won’t be visible to anyone.

2. Ensure that all hair strands are tamed using your daily hair gel. You can also use hairspray products that you would commonly see women using to calm your baby’s hair.

3. Position your wig on top of your head and place it gently from the front towards the back.

4. Once you have placed your wig, lift it from the front and place the bobby pins from the wig wefts to your natural hair. Use as many pins as you need to ensure that your wig is secured firmly.

Pros

The pros of choosing bobby pins to secure your wigs on your head include the following:

• Bobby pins are affordable.

• They don’t suction your wig, so your head won’t feel hot.

• Bobby pins work well even when your skin is sensitive.

Cons

Note the following cons as well:

• Not using enough bobby pins can make your wigs feel loose in the middle of cross-dressing.

• Improper insertion of bobby pins can make you feel uncomfortable, especially around your head.

6. Securing with Wig Clips

This last method is probably the most challenging because you need to be good at sewing to use wig clips.

When you use wig clips, you need to sew them into your wig cap before clipping them to your hair.

However, I strongly recommend this method when you want a long-term solution to loose wigs because once you sew the clips in, you don’t have to worry about your wigs popping out anymore.

Follow the easy step-by-step procedure below to  secure your wig on your head by using wig clips successfully:

1. Sew your wig clips to the wig, starting in front towards the back. Ensure that there is an inch of space in between each wig clip.

2. Collect your hair and pull it off your hairline, gathering it on your nape. Tame any flyaways or baby hair using a gel or hairspray.

3. Slide the clips to your hair from the front. Ensure that everything is secure, the wig is not loose, and you’re done!

Pros

The pros of sewing wig clips to secure your wigs on your head include the following:

• It’s long-lasting.

• Does not cause any discomfort, even when the clips are gripping your hair

Cons

Note the following cons as well:

• Your wigs can be damaged when the clips are not sewn properly.

• The clips can scratch your skin and irritate it, especially when sensitive.

Wigs are important for us crossdressers because they help complete our feminine looks, making us appear attractive and fabulous!
