How to Celebrate Transgender Awareness Week & TDOR 2024?
There are constant challenges, discrimination, and other issues facing trans folks. Fortunately, many want to support the community. The problem? Most don’t know where to start or what will have a real impact.
TDOR is an incredible chance to show up, spread awareness, and honor trans lives.
To celebrate TDOR this 2024, you can dedicate time to learning and uplifting trans voices. Others help by donating, educating, or joining events. There are many opportunities to make a positive difference!
In this guide, I’ll share ways to make this week meaningful for you and your trans friends.
What is Transgender Awareness Week
Transgender Awareness Week is a big event that happens every November. It’s a special time dedicated to raising awareness about the trans community.
During this week, allies and trans people come together to celebrate gender diversity and address trans issues.
This week leads up to the TDOR on November 20. It’s a day focused on honoring those in the community who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence.
Key Themes of Transgender Awareness Week
The main concepts often highlighted in this celebration include
Visibility and Representation
A study or discussion of how trans folks are represented in popular media or society at large. This aims to understand how the world interprets or sees the trans community.
Support and Allyship
The theme is about taking active steps to learn, unlearn biases, and support trans individuals.
Safety and Protection
Safety is an ongoing concern for many transgender people. So, Transgender Awareness Week always seeks to advocate for and define more inclusive policies.
Celebration of Resilience and Joy
Though the community faces serious issues, the event is ultimately a celebration. So, it’s important to also celebrate the joy and resilience in the trans community.
Notable Figures and Historical Context
The week is a fitting event to remember pivotal people and moments that helped push the community forward. Some are
● Christine Jorgensen – In the 1950s, Christine became one of the first Americans to publicly undergo gender confirmation surgery. Her decision sparked national conversations about gender and identity at a time when such topics were taboo.
● Reed Erickson – A trans man who founded Erickson Educational Foundation in 1964. It’s the very first organization established to push trans and gay equality.
● Rita Hester – Gwendolyn Ann Smith started TDOR to keep Rita’s memory alive. Rita was murdered in 1998 and still has not been solved.
If you want to learn more notable figures and their stories, Dr. Kit Heyam, Ph. D wrote a book called Before We Were Trans. It’s a great source of info on “A New History of Gender.”
What is Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is observed every year on November 20. It marks the close of Transgender Awareness Week. It’s a very solemn day committed to commemorating trans folks who were victims of anti-trans violence.
TDOR officially began in 1999, organized by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith. As previously mentioned, Rita Hester’s murder started the chain of events that lead to TDOR. The media’s lack of coverage on her case, plus the injustice, are things many trans people connect to.
TDOR became a way to address those injustices, remember lost lives, and raise awareness about the violence that still affects the trans community today.
Purpose and Significance of Transgender Day of Remembrance
TDOR is powerful and multifaceted.
● It’s a day of respect. This day is dedicated to recognizing those who faced violence simply because of who they were.
● It’s a a wake-up call for everyone — inside and outside of the trans community.
● It’s an opportunity to spotlight the ongoing issues of transphobia, discrimination, and others.
● For allies, it’s a moment to reflect on what more can be done to support and protect trans people.
Why is Transgender Day of Remembrance Important
TDOR isn’t just a day of reflection. It’s an annual statement of solidarity, remembrance, and advocacy. The day puts the limelight on the following:
a) Rising Violence
One of the critical reasons TDOR exists is to bring attention to the rising violence against trans folks.
● In 2024 alone, 27 trans people were murdered in the United States. It’s a heartbreaking increase in trans violence.
● Even more striking is that 74% of these victims were people of color. Nearly half were Black trans women.
● Gun violence accounted for 63% of these murders.
These stats underscore the lethal dangers trans people face. TDOR reminds many that these are not just statistics — they’re people whose lives mattered.
So, TDOR calls for better policies to protect vulnerable communities.
b) Mourning the Losses
TDOR is about mourning those lost to violence. It’s saying their names so they aren’t forgotten. Every life lost represents a person who faced discrimination and danger simply for being who they were.
Vigils, often marked by candlelight, allow people to come together in shared grief and respect for those who are no longer with the community. It’s hard to describe the feeling at a vigil. There’s a heavy sadness.
At the same time, there’s also a shared commitment to make sure no one else has to endure that pain.
c) Highlighting Systemic Oppression
TDOR also shines a light on the larger issues of systemic oppression. These factors contribute to violence and discrimination against trans people.
Trans individuals face significant barriers in:
● Employment
● Healthcare
● Housing
These are often made worse by prejudice and lack of legal protections. For example, laws that restrict access to gender-affirming care or limit the rights of trans people to participate in public life only make things more challenging.
By highlighting these issues, TDOR reminds everyone that trans violence is just a part of a much bigger problem.
It encourages many to think critically about what can be done on a systemic level.
d) Activism and Advocacy
TDOR wasn’t started just to parade around memories of those lost or give stats. It also inspire activism and advocacy. A TDOR event often sparks a sense of responsibility to do more, to speak out, and to push for change.
Many organizations use this time to promote awareness campaigns, fundraise, and work on policy changes aimed at protecting trans lives.
TDOR serves as a call for all of us to advocate for a world where trans people can live freely and safely.
Even if you’re new to activism, TDOR is a great way to start because it shows how personal commitment can make a real difference.
e) Community Solidarity and Support
Though it was started from pain, TDOR actually brings the trans community and its allies closer. It breeds solidarity and support.
There’s a comforting strength in knowing that no trans person is alone in this struggle. To remember that others share the pain and hopes of the movement.
TDOR events often bring together a diverse mix of people who are united in their support of trans lives.
