Hairstyle Mistakes Every Crossdresser Should Avoid
Hello, lovelies! In the past, I’ve written about what are the best hairstyles for genderfluid crossdressers. Now, I’ve come with quite the opposite. Beware of these common hairstyle mistakes among the MtF crossdressing community. In this post, we’ll see what they are and how to avoid them.
A common struggle for trans women and crossdressers alike is their hair.
A feminine, usually long, haircut is not only a powerful way to express femininity but also very difficult to achieve for many.
Choosing the wrong dye color and getting a haircut that doesn’t compliment your face are some examples.
So, if you are having trouble growing your hair out and going through that dubious and awkward mid-length phase, don’t worry!
Please keep reading to discover the usual mistakes most of us make at some point and the tips to avoid them!
1. Growing Your Hair Long
Most crossdressers, gender fluids, and trans women let their hair grow out when they find their inner femininity.
I believe that I speak for most of us when I think of how many times we have heard the phrase, “Why don’t you get a nice haircut?”.
And how tiring it is to hear it.
The truth is that it takes a lot of patience to grow your hair long, especially for those who are not going through hormone replacement therapy.
It takes a while even for some biological women to grow their hair.
But you can have a nice feminine haircut even when it is still short to keep it looking nice.
You can make the transition between short and long hair, avoiding the awkward phase.
You’ll have to talk with your stylist about what you are planning to do and research many in-between hairstyles on the internet.
This brings us to the next point.
2. A Haircut Too Short
Not a face is identical to another, and the same happens with the hair.
And they both go hand in hand. The haircut and how you style it have an immense impact on your face and looks.
Choosing the correct ones is critical to bring out your best facial features and make you look feminine and beautiful.
Also, selecting the right hairstyle can help you hide your Adam’s apple in plain sight.
Long, layered, and curly hair will keep people’s eyes fixed on it instead of your neck.
A bob cut it’s a difficult one. A short bob cut that ends just at the level of your neck will draw attention towards your Adam’s apple.
Unless you cover it up with make-up or a scarf, you will be giving yourself away if you intend to pass as a female.
Depending on how long your hair is, many different cuts look feminine and are universal for most faces.
A great option for those who are looking for a versatile style that can pass as masculine as well.
If your face has an angular shape, haircuts with sharp edges, like a pixie cut, are good.
Curly-styled hairstyles are the way to go for those with this type of face.
Look for some styles that you wish and ask your stylist how they can be adapted to highlight your features.
3. Choosing the Wrong Color
Once you settle for a haircut, you might think of dyeing it.
It’s such a glamorous feeling walking out of the salon with new hair color!
There are so many options one can have doubts when selecting one.
The best thing you can do is match the dye color with your skin tone.
It’s very simple; you just have to look at the veins in the inner part of your wrist.
If they look blueish, you have a cool-tinted skin tone.
On the contrary, if they appear greenish, you have a warm skin tone.
This is the most fundamental tip that you shouldn’t forget when choosing a color for your hair.
Respect your skin tone when choosing a dye.
If it’s cool, go for cool colors like burgundy coffee or whitish tones like ash blonde.
Go for golden, honey blonde, and auburn dyes if you have a warm skin tone.
You can go nuts and choose a wild color like pink, respecting this rule, and it will look amazing!
3. Wearing and Bad Wig, Badly
If, for any reason, you decide to wear a wig instead of experimenting with your natural hair, you can always wear a wig.
If so, first, you have to follow all the previous rules in this article, as they apply also to wigs.
Then, be sure to acquire a good wig.
It doesn’t have to be one made out of natural hair as they are the most expensive and, sadly, best too.
But there are much cheaper but good options in the market that can fit your budget.
We have so many different ones in our store; be sure to check them out!
Last but not least, be sure to wear it safely and correctly.
Don’t place it too high or too low on your forehead.
To be sure it doesn’t fall, use clips, a wig cap, or a wig grip.
To know all the secrets there are to wearing a wig, be sure to check our previous posts where we delved into it.
4. Pushing the Limits with Your Wig/Extensions
It’s natural for crossdressers to add up the volume to their hair.
Whichever method you choose for it is fine as long as you don’t overdo it.
The volume and length must be chosen correctly and according to your hair and age.
To keep a natural look, extensions should match your hair type and color.
If the first isn’t the same, styling your hair will be a living hell.
The second will make you look funny unless you dye it, of course.
If you go for a wig, the options to choose from are plenty more, but remember to keep it classy and suited to your age.
Adding too much volume to your hair can weigh down your facial features and make you look older.
This is another reason why it is so important to choose the correct haircut for you.
5. Not Bringing Out Your Features
You may be tempted to opt for a cut that you saw a celebrity wearing or someone you know.
Before you do, you must think if this style will suit the shape of your face.
The haircut you like may not be the one that brings up your features.
This is done by trimming the hair in layers, even if you want as long as you can.
But two or three simple layers can really make a difference and make you look your best and younger.
6. Wearing Your Hair Combed Back
There are very few who can pass on this advice, but unless you are one of those lucky ones with a head full of hair and no receding hairline visible, you shouldn’t wear your hair combed back.
Testosterone, the hormone responsible for manly traits, does quite a job in time upstairs.
To look your best, you should avoid styling your hair like this so you don’t expose your hairline.
Besides, this is something that everyone who wears a wig should avoid, too.
You will reveal the edge of the wig, ruining your look.
So, remember to search for a different hairdo that doesn’t expose your beauty tricks.
Bangs and a long fringe will not only hide both of these but also reduce the height of your forehead.
This is great because biological males tend to have larger foreheads than women. You’d be killing two birds with one stone!
7. Not Trimming Often
This is even harder for those who are still trying to achieve their desired hair length.
Hair, along with our hands and faces, is almost always exposed and receives damage from various sources.
In our hair, this manifests in the color and the ends.
Splitting ends look awful, and even just a few can steal the spotlight from the rest of your hair.
Trimming often at the ends will help keep your hair looking healthy and bright.
I’m not saying to go to a salon and ask “just the tips” because we all know where that leads.
Unless you trust your stylist and love their work a lot, it is better to do it by yourself.
This way, you can control how much you trim.
Before you do, watch many tutorials so you don’t mess it up.
As you can see, besides patience being the hardest, there are a few common mistakes that most of us make expressing our femininity through our hair.
It’s a wonderful feeling having the right haircut and styling however you want!
It’s a tiring road for many of us growing our hair long, but you can seize the journey and enjoy the view with different hairstyles in the meantime!
Keep your objective clear and work for it, and a brighter dawn filled with hair will shine! Hope to see you soon!
